Keep Taking the Pill (2025)
by Jamie Walker
Keep Taking the Pill uses mixed media and personal narrative to expose the complexities of Endometriosis, challenging simplified treatments and advocating for visibility, empathy, and justice in women’s health.
Artist Statement
Keep Taking the Pill addresses the hard impact of Endometriosis on women's lives, documenting the emotional and physical experiences of a condition that is often misunderstood and under-documented. Inspired by my own experiences and the stories of women in my family, I wanted to create a book that fosters awareness, empowerment, and empathy. Each page intertwines vivid imagery with strong narratives, revealing the emotional and physical toll of endometriosis, while advocating for social justice and the recognition of women's health issues.
My creative process involves a blend of mixed media, including collage, paint, and hand-drawn illustrations. I utilize textures and colors to evoke the stark realities and physical turmoil faced by those affected. The visual elements are complemented by testimonies that highlight resilience and community, emphasizing the importance of dialogue in challenging societal norms surrounding women's health.
This work also pushes back against the idea that “taking the pill” is a simple solution. It is not just about the pill—it is about the side effects, the hormones, and the emotional impact that comes with it. The pill does not always meet women’s needs, and this project speaks to that complexity. By amplifying these narratives, Keep Taking the Pill aims not only to inform, but also to inspire connection, action, and solidarity, highlighting the urgent need for visibility and empowerment in women’s health and inviting viewers to engage in a broader conversation about social justice.
