Artist Statement
Rhythmic Habits is a reflective exploration of the inner workings of a mind experiencing Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). The book is constructed from record sleeves, with vinyl records functioning as the pages, each painted and collaged onto. The use of records symbolizes the rhythms and repetitive patterns associated with OCD, as well as the constant “spinning” of thoughts and compulsions.
As viewers move through the book, they are able to physically spin the records, causing the patterns to shift, blue, and morph. This interaction creates an optical effect that mirrors the disorientation and intensity of repetitive thought cycles. The use of primary color palette and geometric shapes reflects the way OCD is often simplified or misunderstood, while the layered and detailed compositions work to challenge those misconceptions.
OCD is not simply about neatness or organization—it is a condition that involves intrusive patterns, compulsions, and repetitive counting that can be difficult to control. The recurring patterns throughout the book represent this experience of feeling stuck or caught in cycles on repetition. Rhythmic Habits brings attention to the complexity beneath the surface, revealing the depth of OCD beyond its commonly perceived simplicity.
